STILLWATER RESERVOIR REDUCES FLOODING IN BLACK AND BEAVER RIVERS The Stillwater Reservoir has stored more than 2.5 billion gallons of water since Monday, June 26, reducing the flow in the Black River by 25 percent. Stillwater Reservoir, operated by the Hudson River-Black River Regulating District, is located in Herkimer County on the Beaver River, a tributary of the Black River. This regulating reservoir stored 1.55 billion gallons of water on Wednesday, June 28, reducing the average Black River flow by at least 15,000 gallons per second.
“We are fortunate that, prior to the storms, the Stillwater Reservoir had ample room to store this runoff so we were able to reduce down river stream flows and minimize flooding,” stated Glenn A. LaFave, Executive Director of the Hudson River - Black River Regulating District. Had the Stillwater Reservoir not been able to impound the runoff from the recent heavy rains, peak flow in the Black River would have exceeded 73,000 gallons per second.
The Hudson River - Black River Regulating District is a public benefit corporation of the State of New York that operates 5 reservoirs in the Adirondack Mountains. |
